Top 12 of Lights, Canberra, Action!
After a long hiatus from being involved with LCA projects, this year we decided to enter our first film under the What’s On Media banner. This would also mark Mikey’s first ever debut as director of a full narrative piece.
We teamed up with our long time friend and collaborator, Dan Sanguineti, from Sanguineti Media Pictures, and writer Russell Lee to help fulfil Mikey’s vision of a psychological horror based around body image, mental health and the pressures put onto us by society; and with a bit of an 80’s VHS type feel to the visuals.
The short film, A Creature Like Me, was shot over two days, with no budget, and starred fantastic Queanbeyan actor Tim Stiles. We also welcomed some of the students from the filmmaking course at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment to help out on set, for a bit of hands on experience.
The score was composed by Mikey’s long time school friend, Chris Begg, and the sound design and editing was all completed my Mikey. There was even a cheeky voice over cameo by our mate Scotty Marsters, who was one half of the greatest Canberran morning show team ever, Scotty & Nige, on 104.7.
Out of around 40 entries, we were informed that our film had made the top 12 of the competition! Something we were extremely excited about, seeing as it was our first time entering.
On the night of the screening, in the Rose Gardens of Old Parliament House, it was great to see old filmmaking mates, and meet new ones as well. Each and every film was so completely different and brilliant, we loved them all.
And even though we didn’t win any awards on the night, we were just very honoured to be nominated alongside such amazing local talent.
Now we wait for next years competition :)
*A Creature Like Me is currently doing the rounds of national and international film festivals, and once done will be available to watch online.
